Someone who actually answers at three in the morning

Plenty of companies advertise 24/7. Most of them mean an answerphone that gets checked at nine.

Ours means Rob's mobile, and Rob picks it up. That's the entire difference, and it's only possible because this is an owner-run business rather than a dispatch operation — there's no rota to wake up and no depot to open. If the van is available and you're inside our area, we can be moving within the hour.

Urgent collections start at £90, or £40 an hour for longer jobs. We confirm the price on the phone before we set off, at whatever hour you're calling. You will never get a bill with a night surcharge you weren't told about.

What "urgent" actually looks like in practice

The jobs that come in out of hours are rarely the ones people expect:

  • Tenancy deadlines — keys due back at 6pm, half the flat still in the flat
  • Relationship breakdowns — someone needing their belongings out of a shared home tonight, calmly and without a scene
  • Hospital and care discharges — a relative coming home unexpectedly and a bed or chair that has to be in place before they arrive
  • Trade emergencies — a builder or fitter needing materials moved between sites first thing, or plant recovered before a job starts
  • Letting agents and landlords — a property that has to be cleared before a viewing in the morning
  • Event and hospitality — equipment that has to be somewhere by a fixed hour, and a delivery that's fallen through
  • Failed deliveries and seller deadlines — a Marketplace seller who'll only hold an item until tonight

None of these are things you can plan around. That's the point of the service.

How fast we can realistically get to you

Honesty is more useful than a marketing promise here, so:

  • Central Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch (BH1–BH17, BH23) — typically within the hour, often faster at night when the roads are clear
  • Outer BH postcodes, Wimborne, Ferndown, Broadstone, Verwood, Ringwood — usually one to two hours
  • Further out — New Forest fringe, Dorchester direction, Southampton — we'll give you a realistic time on the call

The genuine constraint is whether the van is already on a job. If it is, we'll tell you straight away rather than string you along while you lose an hour you didn't have. If we can't help, we'll say so — you're better off knowing at once so you can ring someone else.

Overnight and very early morning are often the fastest times to get us, counterintuitively. No traffic, no parking problems, no loading restrictions in town.

What we'll move at short notice

Anything that fits in the van and can be handled by one or two people: single items, packages and parcels, furniture, appliances, a room's worth of belongings, tools and materials, and full flat contents at a push.

We can also collect on your behalf if you can't be there — a common one for people stuck at work while a seller, storage unit or letting agent needs the item gone. We'll need it in writing (a text or WhatsApp is fine) confirming what we're collecting and from whom, and ideally the other party expecting us by name. It saves a lot of doorstep confusion at eleven at night.

What we can't do at short notice is anything needing specialist licensed handling — asbestos, chemicals, gas cylinders — or a genuine full house removal with no notice at all. A three-bed house needs a crew and a plan, not one van at midnight.

What it costs, and why there's no midnight mark-up

The rate is the rate. We don't run a separate night tariff, and we don't quote one figure on the phone and a different one on the invoice.

Realistic figures:

  • Single item or package, local, urgent: from £90
  • A few items or a small load, local: £120–£180
  • Room's worth of belongings, urgent, local: £180–£280
  • Longer distance or multi-stop: quoted on the call

What does affect the price is distance, how much is coming, whether stairs are involved, and whether a second person is needed for heavy lifting. All of that gets factored in before we leave, so the number you're told is the number you pay.

One thing worth saying plainly: if your job isn't actually urgent, don't book it as urgent. Booking the same work for tomorrow morning as a standard man and van job is usually the same price or less, and it's a calmer experience for everyone. We'd rather tell you that than take the booking.

Why an owner-operator can do this at all

A 24/7 service only works if the person answering is the person driving. Larger firms can't offer it economically — they'd need staff on call, overtime rates and a duty manager, and the cost of all that goes on your bill.

Because Rob owns the van, answers the phone and does the job, the overhead is simply not there. It also means the person you speak to at 3am is the person who knows whether the van is free, what will fit in it, and how long it takes to get to Hamworthy at that hour. Hiring a man with a van in a genuine emergency turns out to be both the fastest and the cheapest route, which isn't true of most services.

The trade-off, stated honestly: there's one van. If it's out, it's out. We're not a fleet and we can't be in two places at once.

"I needed someone to pick up a sofa for me and Robert was brilliant from start to finish. Friendly on Wottsapp . The day before he messaged just to make sure everything was ok. He messaged me the morning of pick up & let me know what time they would be arriving. They were great getting the sofa downstairs and taking it to the flat. Nothing was too much trouble. I will definitely be using these guys again. Thanks to you both. Lisa Osborne"
